CoGro Discussion Qs (Jonah 1:7-10)

  1. Have you ever thought intentionally about who you are? About your identity? Or about what it means to be human? What led you to ask such questions?

  2. Some of the things we try to make our identity on feel secure but in reality are quite flimsy. Have you ever based your identity on something that turned out to be unstable or insecure? What was it and how did you learn that lesson? Are there basing your identity on something other than God even now in your life?

  3. The Book of Jonah is meant to be a rebuke to the people of God who have placed their national identity above their identity as God's people. What are some of the ways you see the church in the United States doing that?

  4. We said that repentance was the way to recover our identity in God. That included acknowledging God as Creator and Redeemer, but also in allowing God to determine our identities. What are some of our God-given identities?

  5. In the sermon, the pastor said "In Jesus, you are no longer what you've done; you are how much you are loved." In what ways is having your identity in Jesus stable or secure? Why might relying on God for our identity often feel less secure than relying on, say, our money or our success?
