Morning Prayer: Our City is All for Show

It’s the outer parts of a culture that often grab the most attention, and our parades and shows certainly do that. But the principality and power of putting on a good show often leads to an over-emphasis on looking good which in turn can lead to hollowness and lack of substance. Many of us drive cars we can’t afford and are deeply concerned about the clothes that we wear. We’re worried about whether we get into the right schools and have the right boxes checked on our resumes. This principality and power has often infiltrated the church where we strive to look like good Christians but have failed to exhibit the substance of the work of Christ in our lives.

PRAYER: Father, it’s so easy for us to check the boxes and make a show of things. We love the praise and admiration we receive from others. But you see into the heart; you know what’s on the inside. And you’ve said that you’re not impressed with pomp and show. Please humble us and teach us to put on godliness. Show us the ways of modesty and meekness. Amen.
