Evening Prayer

Scripture: O Lord, my strength and my stronghold, my refuge in the day of trouble, to you shall the nations come from the ends of the earth and say: Our fathers have inherited nothing by lies, worthless things in which there is no profit. Can man make for himself gods? Such are not gods!” (Jeremiah 16:19-20)

We all have idols that we have to leave behind. Some we have inherited from our families of origin. Others we have absorbed from the culture around us. Still others we’ve invented whole-cloth. This is true for all peoples across the world. But while some are still trapped in their idols, Jesus is always calling us to confess our idols before him and to repent. What idols have you held onto today?

Prayer: Lord, I confess to you the idols of my life… Please forgive me for giving my allegiance to any but you. And grant those people across the world freedom from their idols. Bring them to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, that they may serve the one true God. And grant me to rest in my own salvation and in the comfort of knowing that you died for my sins, even for my idolatry. Thank you for your grace. Amen.
